Historical boiler licensing

The terms "show boiler" and "historical boiler" are synonymous and mean a boiler that is used only for display and demonstration purposes. In recognition of the historical significance of show boilers in maintaining a working reminder of Minnesota's agricultural, transportation, and lumber industries, show boilers and engines are considered to be historical artifacts.

Individuals who have a current license from the following states can operate historical boilers in Minnesota:

  • Ohio
  • North Dakota
  • Manitoba, Canada

Individuals who have a current Minnesota historical boiler operator's license can operate historical boilers in Ohio without further examination.

Steam schools

Individuals who attend and receive a certificate of completion from the University of Rollag Steam School, Wisconsin Historical Steam Engine Association Steam School or the Heritage Park of North Iowa Steam School may use this training for up to 16 hours of operating experience toward the 50 hours required for the Minnesota Historical Boiler Engineers License. Please include a copy of your certificate of completion from the school when applying for the Historical Boiler Engineers License.
